Painting Competition - Mini Masters

Competition Categories

We have five categories this year for Mini Masters.

Small scale figure (Under 54mm)

• Any smaller scale figure, whether on a gaming base or a plinth.

Large scale figure ( 54mm and over)

• Figures over 54mm go into this category. This includes 75mm scale full figures, busts, and largescale Warhammer models such as cavalry and monsters.

Squad

• A unit of 3-10 figures that are presented as a collected entry. This collection does not need to be a legal gaming unit, but should be cohesive and represent the same faction, army, team, gang, warband, etc. These should be mounted on a collected base - either a plinth, or a tray.

  • Eg. All ultramarines, all Goliath, all PanOceania are all acceptable. An example ultramarine squad could be three bladeguard, or it could be a bladeguard, a captain, and a chaplain.

Diorama/Duel

• An open canvas to showcase a dramatic scene with no limits on models, scale or size.

Junior

• Category for all entrants aged 16 and under. There are no restrictions on entries.

  
  

Format and Awards

The judging format for the event is the ‘Open System’. The Open System aims to be a competition that inspires entrants to compete against themselves and a standard instead of against other entrants.

Each award winning entry is awarded based on the standard it achieved: Gold, Silver, or Bronze. There is no limit to the number of awards that can be given out across the competition. For example if there are 25 entries and 5 are deemed to be of a Gold standard, then all 5 will be awarded a Gold.

Gold, Silver and Bronze Mini Masters pin will be awarded to entries deemed to meet the standard.

In addition, there will be the following awards:

Overall Best in Show: Selected by the Judging Panel.

People’s Choice: Selected by participants and spectators over the weekend.

1, 2, 3 Best in Category: Selected by the Judging panel from among the Gold awarded entrants.

These additional awards will be awarded additional prizes.

General Judging Guidance

Figure painting covers a broad range of areas in which a piece may excel, and due to the artistic nature will always have a level of subjectivity when judging. However, the following categories are some, but not all, areas which will be considered:

• Aesthetics - The overall beauty of a piece. The colour composition, use of intensity, value, saturation, and lighting. Visual hierarchy, balance of forms, dynamics and weight distribution.

• Ambience- Atmosphere, environmental integration and coherence, basing, weathering

• Technique - Rendering quality, the execution of technical methods used, lighting and texture.

• Craft - Construction and presentation of subjects in the piece. Care of assembly and preparation, gaps, creation of any basing.

• Storytelling - Clarity and strength of narrative.

Competition Rules

1. There is a $5 submission fee per entry. The submission deadline is 10am on Sunday 8th of June. You can preregister for competition entries online https://events.tabletopwarfare.com.au/event-details/painting-competition-mini-masters

2. Mini Masters reserves the right to refuse or disqualify any entry that contains or promotes hate speech, bigotry, extreme or gratuitous nudity, explicit sexual content, or material deemed offensive or inappropriate for a public audience.

3. All entries must be submitted, in person,by the posted deadline.

4. All entries must be entered under the name of the artist who created them.

5. There is no limit on the number of submissions per artist.

6. By entering the Mini Masters competition you agree to let the event organisers photograph your entries for use in galleries, ads, and promotional materials.

7. The Mini Masters team will take every care in the handling of models during the event, but are not responsible for any damage that may be sustained during the event.

8. You will be responsible for picking up your entry by 5pm Sunday 8th of June. Anyone who does not pick up their entries by this deadline will forfeit ownership of the entries. Please contact Table Top Warfare Prospect if you need to make alternate arrangements at prospect@tabletopwarfare.com.au.

Judging decisions are final and not subject to change.

Masterclasses

• Take the next step and learn some advanced techniques to get your models to the next level.

Beginner classes

• Learn some of the basics of painting to help get your models where you want them to be. Models will be primed and ready to be painted, limited colours will be provided as well as a wet and dry palette. Paint brushes will be supplied.

Speed painting competitions

• Show off your skills with limited paints in a frantic battle against time to paint a single model. Models will be primed and ready to be painted, limited colours will be provided as well as a wet and dry palettes. Paint brushes will be supplied. If you wish to bring your own materials that is recommended.

A painters lounge for casual painting.

• Hang out and paint in a casual setting. The painters lounge will consist of a place to paint. No models, paint, or painting equipment will be provided.

Sausage sizzle

• Enjoy a sausage for $2 during lunch.

Feedback Panel

• On Sunday afternoon the judges will be available to provide you with feedback on your entries.
